This illustration is a slightly cubist version of Johannes Vermeer's painting The Girl with the Pearl Earring. A much more synthetic version than the original. According to wikipedia "recent writings on Vermeer point to the image being a tronie, the name given in Holland in the 17th century to peculiar or expressive effigies, for decorative use, which were not intended to be an identifiable portrait and which in many cases painters produced to demonstrate their expertise."
