It is a very common perennial shrub and typical of the undergrowth of Mediterranean pine and oak forests. The fruits are first green, then red and finally - when ripe - turn black. Although it is usually found in the form of a shrub about 3 meters high, it is actually a tree that can reach 6 meters.
TRADITIONAL USES
The sap is called mastic and is used to produce a gum, or highly aromatic latex. In ancient times, this latex was used as chewing gum and is currently used in orthodontic applications, to manufacture varnishes and also in bakery and liquor manufacturing.
Mastic leaves are considered to be astringents, antihemorrhagic y anti-inflammatory. It is also used to facilitate the healing of wounds, cuts and sores and for cut diarrhea. Reference
