ABOUT THE BROWN HEDGEHOG
Possibly introduced from North Africa, the brown hedgehog is smaller than the other two European hedgehogs. In the Iberian Peninsula its limited distribution overlaps with those of the more obscure common hedgehog, with whom it is difficult to distinguish. It is a mainly nocturnal mammal that lives in Mediterranean areas and in the Canary Islands. The subspecies of the Iberian Peninsula is classified as Atelerix algirus algirus. It is about 20 cm long and weighs about 850 g. It lives in open areas such as meadows with scrub or crops. They consume large quantities of insects, worms, snails and even fruits fallen from the tree, occasionally they can capture small vertebrates.
