Print signed with a watercolor illustration of several sprigs of llentiscle (mastic in Valencian).

It is a very common perennial shrub and typical of the undergrowth of Mediterranean pine and oak forests. The fruits are first green, then red and finally - when ripe - turn black. Although it is usually found in the form of a shrub about 3 meters high, it is actually a tree that can reach 6 meters.

The mastic tree normally lives in Mediterranean climates, in full sun, but also in places with partial shade such as in the undergrowth of pine and oak forests. It can tolerate temperatures as low as -10°C, although it lives best in climates with little frost. It grows throughout the Mediterranean area of Europe and Africa, and in the Canary Islands.

TRADITIONAL USES

The sap is called mastic and is used to produce a gum, or highly aromatic latex. In ancient times, this latex was used as chewing gum and is currently used in orthodontic applications, to manufacture varnishes and also in bakery and liquor manufacturing.

Mastic leaves are considered to be astringents, antihemorrhagic y anti-inflammatory. It is also used to facilitate the healing of wounds, cuts and sores and for cut diarrhea. Reference
