ON THE DRAWING. The drawing (or illustration) depicts a hen that I personally met in the Ilam region of Nepal. The hen was running around freely on the terrace of the hotel where I was staying. I made the trip to Nepal with the excuse of making a book (Nepal the Artbook)
ABOUT HENS. Chickens (Gallus gallus domesticus) are a domestic subspecies of the Southeast Asian species Gallus Gallus. It has a global distribution. It is also the most numerous bird on the planet with about 16,000 million specimens (estimates I do not know if very well documented). It can be found in supermarkets, fast and slow food "restaurants", on farms, in public parks in Utrecht and many other places. Most hens live very cramped and without seeing sunlight from the moment they are born. Their explosive success as a large species has come at a dramatic cost. Fighting for better living conditions is imperative.
They live between 5 and 10 years. Males and females have different social structures.
"Hens, like many birds, tend to attack other hens showing signs of illness. If they see the red color due to an injury on another hen, the others don't stop pecking her, and cause serious damage."
