ABOUT THE MEDITERRANEAN TURTLE
It is the most widely distributed land tortoise in Europe and is easily seen in much of the Balkans and on several Mediterranean islands. It has a highly domed carapace, sometimes in greenish tones and with variable dark brown markings, older individuals tend to be darker. This species hibernates from October/November to February/May in dense leaf litter or a hole it digs in the white soil, although it may come out in winter to bask in the sun. It is up to 20 cm long. It feeds on herbaceous vegetation and fruits as well as some invertebrates and carrion.
